Kenyans to enjoy Christmas to the fullest with some of them going overboard.
When we were growing up Christmas was something that we looked forward to
because it was the only time we met with the whole clan and had time to play
with our cousins. It was also the one chance we had to go up country and get a
new outfit. The most rare meals like chicken and chapati were in plenty during
Christmas.
Things have changed but Kenyans still wait for Christmas
eagerly now more than ever. Everyone has their own reason for looking forward
to Christmas.
To begin with there are those who just want travel to up
country and spend time with their relatives just like me.
There are also those who look forward to road trips
and drinking spree. “This year I want to explore at least
three different counties. I need a designated driver because I will drink
till my body can take no more,” those were James Mutua’s words when I asked
about his Christmas plans.
I know some people save money all year, the likes of James so
that they can have something to spend in December. By spending I mean buying
alcohol for friends and going for road trips.
A
complete contrast of those who go drinking is a group of Kenyans who spend the
festive seasons in crusades, workshops, seminars and church camps building
their spirituality.
There are Kenyans who insist on going to Mombasa for
Christmas every year so that they spend their time on the beach and in resorts
as domestic tourist. Shirley Genga ascertains this fact in her article on Crazy
Monday by reminding us about, “the yearly great migration of Nairobians to the
Coast like a swarm of bees”.
Shopping is one thing that goes hand in hand with the
festivities. Kenyans shop for anything and everything during Christmas. This
range from clothes, shoes, jewelry, household items, gifts, food stuff, drinks,
and the list is endless.
